Another post where I mention the blog conference. Sorry, some great things really do happen there (I just need to find time to share all of it).
Before the conference officially started, I was invited to learn more about a new company, ZipList. I heard a bit about them from my friend, Erin of Coupon Cravings, and was excited at the little bit she was able to share. I am SO excited for this product for many reasons, but first let me share what it is.
ZipList is a FREE online service to help you with efficiency at the grocery store. There is a Universal Recipe Box that allows you to save your favorite recipes from various websites. You can quickly add the ingredients to your online grocery list which is accessible online or via phone. That’s that in a nutshell, but there’s more…
There is also a texting feature. If you have a grocery item you need to add to your list, you can text ZipList. Through magic (and fairies, I’m sure there are fairies), ZipList adds the item to your list immediately. Your shopping list is also categorized automatically (i.e., dairy, canned, etc). That is SO nice to help you get in and out of the store more quickly. And with kids, you KNOW we need to go as fast as we can :)
There is also a ZipList iPhone app in the works. I’m so excited about this! While you can print out your list, I really do love taking advantage of the efficiencies technology offers. I do like to make any lists on my computer because it’s faster than entering via my iPhone. But, when I shop I can have my list and check off what I’ve bought. I’m such a list follower in that way. And, let’s face it when we use coupons we gotta be – it’s part of planning which is integral in saving the most!
The other part I mentioned that I think you will really love is the Universal Recipe Box. I created the Virtual Recipe Box google doc last year as a way to help me personally manage my fave recipes from all over the web. Well, ZipList will do it FOR YOU and has great features to help with efficiency. With the ZipList Recipe Clipper, you can enter any recipe found online (like my Homemade Noodles possibly) to your personal recipe box. There are already thousands of recipes included in the ZipList searchable recipe database, but it’s nice to have the option to add your own!
I think the Universal Recipe Box will allow me to menu plan more effectively. I’m not sure *exactly* how the process will look for me yet since I need to load all of my recipes. But, the “Add to List” feature will help save time since I can quickly add missing recipe ingredients to my grocery list.
I really could go on and on, but I would encourage you to check out ZipList for yourself. I really do think this will save you a lot of time as you create your shopping list and saving your favorite recipes. And, the fact that they are engaging bloggers to find efficiencies in what we do, and how you as readers (or me, as a user) would use ZipList, makes me even more excited.
As a heads up, here will be an official ZipList Twitter Party in March! As soon as I have more details, I will be sure to share with you as well!
**Giveaway now ended**
With all of THAT, I have five (5) Zip List Gift Packs to give away! Each gift pack includes a Blue Avocado Gro Pak Chill Insulated Grocery Bag (as shown above – so awesome too) and a copy of Martha Stewart’s newest cookbook, Everyday Food: Fresh Flavor Fast.
As a side note, ZipList was a sponsor of the Savvy Blogging dinner, and they gave attendees the Blue Avocado bags. They are completely awesome and will definitely be used as I shop with my ZipList!!

My biggest challenge with menu planning is living with two grown men who don’t decide what they want until the last minute. I love them, but yikes!
[Reply]
My biggest challenges to menu planning is sticking to it! Most times I’ll have a meal planned but at the last minute won’t feel like making that particular meal, or one of my children will ask for something different and I’ll concede, or we’ll be running late and I won’t be able to make that meal in time. I’m sure I could go on forever.
[Reply]
My biggest challenge is actually that we end up with too many leftovers. I get meat out to thaw, and then realize we really don’t need it as there are still leftovers in the fridge.
[Reply]
I try to use what we have in the pantry that I got good deals on but can never seem to make a whole meal out of them and random things get left off the list time and time again. It took me forever to finally use a box of Betty Crocker garlic potatoes. I need to only buy what works in a meal! Even if it’s a good deal. :)

My biggest challenges are getting to the grocery and switching meals up to keep everyone wanting to eat. Things can get boring and everyone starts rebeling dinner!

My biggest challenge is a husband who does NOT like vegetables and I don’t care for pasta, so we have to compromise and tend to eat alot of the same things, week after week.

My biggest challenge is that Im vegetarian, Gluten free (celiac disease), and my husband is extremely picky. Menu planning in normally based on what on sale. But I have a hard time locating and organizing my recipe as well. It all needs to be orchestrated just right.
[Reply]
My biggest challenge is simply coming up with recipes to make! I’ve been married for almost 7 months now, and I just don’t have a large repertoire of recipes to pull from for each week, and I dont want to be making the same things all the time. I have to tap many online resources to find new yummy recipes, and I’ve slowly been able to add things to my list.

My biggest challenge of menu planning at home is that I do it everyday for work. So by the time I sit down to do it at home – I am completely out of ideas. One might say, why not use the same menu from work? Answer – money. The work budget is a bit nicer than the home budget :)

SOOO cool. I was just talking to my mom about wishing there was some sort of iPhone app for something like this that I could input on my computer and sink with my phone.
The biggest challenge for me is getting it all organzied. I started this month with a meal calendar and it really has helped me be able to see in advance what supplies I need and don’t need, when to lay out my meat, etc. It just takes sooo long. I love, lovel, love to cook. I hate to make the grocery list part!

My biggest challenge is trying to get in the habit of menu planning.
[Reply]
My biggest challenge is our family’s schedule. I work a full-time job from 9-5 Mon thru Fri and a part-time job 5-9 Thurs-Sat. We also host a bible study at our home on Monday evenings. As such, though we love having family meals and strive to sit at the table together as often as possible, family sit-down meals only happen on Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights. On the nights I’m working, my husband and daughter tend to “fend” with leftovers, soup, sandwiches and other easy things.

I love menu planning, it helps so much in saving time to not have to decide every day what’s for dinner. My biggest issue would probably be having variety in recipes at hand. In order to have the recipes to go through I would have to tote magazines, cookbooks and recipe cards to my computer. It would be so nice to have everything right on hand.

Thanks for sharing this new idea with us! After I make my list, I always re-write it in categories (or in order of aisles I shop first to last). If I had a smartphone, I would love the feature of using your phone for your list. I’m all about using less paper.
My biggest problem with meal planning is that I need to plan for the month and not just the week. I think I would save $ and time this way.
[Reply]

[Reply]
My biggest challenge is on the days when I work until 6:30 then I have to hurry home and fix dinner.
[Reply]
biggest challenges to menu planning for me are organization and time
[Reply]
My biggest issue with menu planning is knowing what I actually have and trying to figure out what to make with all the stuff I have gotten cheap at the store. It’s putting it all together that is hard!
[Reply]
My biggest challenge is I love cookbooks! I read them like novels. So, I have a hard time deciding what to cook. Then when I do decide sometimes the time gets away from me. I’ll have all the ingredients and no time to make it. I freeze what I can to make it at a later date. My husbands only complaint is that I hardly ever make the same thing twice. He says that when I make something he loves I never make it again. It’s usually because I can’t remember which recipe I used or where I got it from.

My biggest challenge is that I plan the meals around our hectic schedule, but the schedule is ever changing. My biggest challenge to menu planning is I don’t always have time to research the best meal options based on the ingredients in my pantry. I like to buy sale items (with coupons), so I work around that. I just need to be more creative on my own and not be afraid to “go beyond the norm” of standard meal prep. Thanks!
[Reply]
My biggest challenge of a menu plan is making the time to do it! I am a married, mom of 3. I work full-time outside of the home, my kids range in age from 3 to 18 and one is always running somewhere, (dance, baseball, afterschool activities, etc.) so I NEVER have time to actually sit down and menu plan, and if I do, I am ALWAYS missing 1 ingredient. I wish I had time and should make time, but can’t seem to.

My biggest challenge to menu planning is just getting organized. I feel like anytime I want to start – I have 3 steps to do before hand – like choosing the meals we eat regularly, starting a master shopping list, checking the calendar for variables like date nights and such. AND the picky eater syndrome is a huge component.
sure would like to win something that could fine tune stuff!! ;D

My biggest challenge is getting up the motivation to plan a menu. When I do, we often have way too many leftovers. A few years back, I started a family recipe book with all our favorites and that does make menu planning easier.

My biggest problem is that I get in a recipe rut…and end up cooking the same things every week b/c I don’t have time to go through all of my books!

My biggest challenge: difficulty matching coupons with grocery store sales (just not enough time to do it well), shopping with a 6 month old, and deciding on the menu in advance! :)

I use a manual system of coverting recipes to grocery lists – this would be very helpful – what a great idea. I doubt I would use it through my phone – only my PC to generate lists and maintain recipes. Thanks!

My biggest challenge to menu planning is that I have been recently too consumed with these couponing web sites, trying to snag every deal, and then I realize it’s dinner time! I’ve got to get an earlier start with the dinner menu. I feel like I am preparing snacks all day for the young ones!
[Reply]
My biggest challenge is when unexpected activities take away the time I thought I had to prepare a nice meal, and then I end up just throwing together whatever is quickest.
[Reply]
Love it!!

What a great giveaway. For me, the biggest challenge is coming up with recipes that are easy, quick, nutritious and yummy. With a 3 year old and a 10 month old, ease of preparation is essential! Thanks so much!

I’m a subscriber! My biggest challenge is just finding the time to do it, and also in an economical way. I know I should look at deals and then plan meals around what’s on sale, but I never seem to follow through with the plan before I get to the store. Then I impulse buy, and end up with a lot of nothing and no full recipe ingredient list!
[Reply]
My biggest problem is time/having stuff planned and prepped ahead of time!

We are a large extended ranching family that comes and goes at will. I truly never know how many people I will be feeding at any meal but dinner is the worst case scenario; I need help planning meals that can be easily expanded when extra appetites come through the door..

I don’t like all the time it takes, maybe this will help, Thanks
[Reply]
I never know who is going to be home. Our twos sons still live at home but they are not always there for dinner. Some times I have too much food or I plan a nice little dinner for just my husband and myself, than the boys show up ready for a home cook meal.

My biggest challenge in menu planning is actually following the menu. I’m very much a planner, so creating a menu each week is something I enjoy. But sticking to the menu can be challenging. So often, life intervenes (Oh, no, we’re out of eggs, so no cornbread with the chili tonight! The toddler didn’t nap, so the lasagna didn’t get assembled with enough time to bake!), and we end up ordering a pizza or heading out to a restaurant.

I don’t have problems with time but I’m really bad at planning and shopping. So I end up cooking whatever I think at the last minute with whatever ingredients I have at home (Is not as bad as it sounds LOL, because at least I don’t do any last minute shopping, I cook what I have).
I hope I could win this time!!

I don’t really have a menu plan, since I live alone. But when my bf comes to visit me, he usually stays for a week, and I try to plan our menu together for the week. He’s more of the “go-to-Safeway every evening to get what you want for dinner that night” type, so sometimes just getting him to think ahead is a challenge.

My biggest challenge is that I don’t take the time to plan out meals so after school/work/homework I’m in the kitchen @ 5 pm wondering what in the world I am going to make for dinner! Scouring through the recipe book searching to see if I have all the ingredients to make a recipe, if not, moving on to the next one until I find one I have everything for and won’t take too long! UGGH!

My biggest challenges are organization and time and money… I work for an airline and need to consider all the meals during my days off and also have enough food for my hubby while I’m away and have some food to take with me during my trips. Plus, my hubby lost his job back in September so we are struggling to eat healthily and be very budget conscious.

My biggest issue with Menu Planning is that I have picky eaters & I get bored with the choices I have to work with. I’ve started making some new things & have found that the kids and hubby will eat them once in awhile… but they all still like the standard fare.

My big problem is sticking to the menu, my hubby wants something other that what I had planned previously.

For me, it’s a combination of all 3 plus this year, we seem to be running hither & thither. I like to cook but find the daily routine sometimes difficult to manage – time constraints do dictate what and when we eat. If I’m planning couponing and then executing couponing, it’s hard to actually meal plan. Thanks for a great giveaway!

I just finished meal planning & couponing today for the first time in months. I forgot how time consuming it can be. I will say the food is usually a lot healthier though! Here’s hoping we can keep it up!
[Reply]
My biggest challenge is that I have four grown sons. I now live alone. I still cook for 5. I still like the meals I prepared and if I freeze the left overs, I don’t ever eat them, so wasted food. It just may be easier and cheaper to go to the fast food places.

My biggest challenge–adapting–I have 3 teens and we all have very hectic schedules–the nights I plan to spend time cooking–things come up —emergency trip to Orthodontist, double overtime game, each kid has a friend that wants to stay for dinner, or Sunday night I cook a huge dinner and no one is home to eat it. I feel like the kitchen gods are always working against me—things that always take 2 hours to defrost –take 8 hours when I really need them etc!!!

My biggest challenge to menu planning is a combination of everything. Having the time to sit down and plan out what were going to eat while having a variety of choices and staying within a “budget”. I also find that I will plan something and then something happens and the plans change and it doesn’t work out.
