NEW Target Price Matching Policy

target value NEW Target Price Matching Policy

Have you heard the news? I had heard ramblings about it, but consider it *official* now that’s it is on the Target website.

From the Target Press Release:

As of July 12, Target stores nationwide will match advertised prices from competitors on identical items in local markets, assuring guests that our products are priced right.

The Press Release goes on to say that if you “find a lower price on an identical single item – defined as the same brand and model number that is listed on a local competitor’s printed advertisement, during the effective date of the ad – we will match that price.”

Also, you can get a price adjustment if a competitor has an item on sale that you purchased at Target. The catch is you must have made the purchase within 7 days of the competitor’s sale/ad date.  Just take a copy of the competitor’s ad and request your adjustment.

I suggest printing off a copy of this press release and keeping it in your binder. If you do want to price match at Target and they are unaware of the new policy, you can share the information with them.

Kudos, Target! We are definitely going to *Expect More* and pay even less!

Thanks to A Thrifty Mom for sharing the link to the Press Release!

I would print off the official Target Coupon Policy and keep it with you while shopping.  There is also now a $.50 Reusable Bag Credit at Target. So, don’t forget your shopping bags so you can get a discount!

Hey there! I had heard about this and wrote a post about it here: http://123vests.blogspot.com/2009/07/target-price-matching.html

I wonder what will happen if you use a Target coupon on an item you are price matching. Do you think if the coupon makes it lower than the match price, they won’t change it or will they give you the additional savings? I think they won’t give you both because I have noticed on my receipts, if you use a Target coupon, it almost always takes off the coupon and basically shows the reduced price as what you paid in case you return it.

Overall though, I think this will be a good thing because I love Target but hated to have to go to another store for groceries. I am not sure how the adjusting at customer service will go though. I wonder if this will make for really long lines at cs. We will see!

Sarah, I would HOPE they would let us use the Target coupon too but I know what you mean. I’m curious to see how this one plays out though. I’m happy that they are doing it because I prefer Target over Walmart. But, our Walmart has a super center and our Target doesn’t…. I guess it’s give/take :)

I was so excited to hear about this…but I am certain that my Target will be WAY behind in getting the memo…they are so frustrating when it comes to couponing. If anything gets complicated (like stacking coupons) things start to fall apart quick….so I really have to profile my checkers closely ( no grouchies, as I call them) and hope for a cheerful checker who understands couponing.
And I love your idea of keeping a copy of the new policy in your binder, great idea.
Thanks for the hot new tip!! KL

My mother-in-law works for Target and I asked her about this, and here is some of what she emailed to me…

*****
There have been a few transactions [so far, using the price match policy], but because the policy is SO very specific, it takes a while for guests to identify items which meet the price match. There may be much more activity as the holiday’s arrive.

I found out the process itself is not really as “guest friendly” at this point in that a cashier cannot provide the price match to the guest at the time of purchase. The guest must pay our price and proceed to guest services for them to review the competitor’s sales ad and properly code the price match transaction for tracking purposes. Target is VERY motivated in metrics…which I fully support. Target may have to re-code each cash register in order for the price match to be performed at the time of purchase…and that may come at a later date.

This policy is probably the lamest of all price matching out there.

They will not match everyday pricing, only items listed in the ad. You have to bring the FULL printed ad to the store, as well.

For instance, we received gift cards to Target and I was going to purchase a “Cozy Coupe” for our son. Target is $10 higher every day compared to Walmart and Toys R Us.

Target refused to consider matching those prices, unless there was a sale. If there was a sale at those other places, why would I even bother buying the higher priced item at Target? So I could endure a complicated purchase/confirm/refund scenario?

Anyway, ending my rant.

Michelle, that’s an interesting point. I wonder how they would validate the everyday price, maybe calling the store? I would definitely purchase it at the cheaper place too.

I am not sure if this will include groceries too. Meijer has a price matching policy, but will not do groceries… only general merchandise. :(

What is Target’s price adjustments for Black Friday?

Here is an example, I just bought the Barbie scooter for $23 at Target and on Black Friday I believe it is going to be $17. Do the do price adjustments, they are both from Target ads? Do you think I could go in and get a price adjustment on Friday? Does it say anything about price adjustments from it’s own store? Thanks!
